The magmatic evolution of Mercury and its exploration by the BepiColombo mission

Abstract:

The innermost planet of our solar system has unique physical and chemical characteristics. Its huge core, comparatively thin mantle, and thick secondary volcanic crust reflect specific conditions of formation and evolution. A variety of magmatic processes under highly reduced conditions have shaped the planet, from the crystallization of its early magma ocean to the latest episodes of explosive volcanism. The presentation will highlight research conducted by the team at ULiège on the planet’s magmatic evolution, as well as future perspectives offered by the ESA BepiColombo mission.
