Paleontology, Paleoecosytems, Paleoenvironments, Paleoclimates (4PAL)
Coordinator : Jeremy MARTIN
Email address: jeremy.martin@ens-lyon.fr
Research themes:
- Biomineralisation – Bioconstruction
- Paleobiology – Paleoecology
- Origin and diversification of groups and ecosystems
- Oceanic and continental paleoenvironments
- Climates at different scales of time and resolution
- Time measurement
Description :
The 4PAL theme brings together palaeontologists, sedimentologists and geochemists whose aim is to understand how, since the Precambrian, environmental and climatic parameters, atmospheric chemistry and ocean chemistry have affected living beings in terms of evolutionary radiations and ecological and physiological adaptations, and how the biosphere and its production feedback on these environments, particularly via the carbon cycle and carbonate production.
The theme’s activities are supported by four analytical platforms: the geology collections, the isotopic (GENESIS) and organic (MOWGLI) geochemistry platforms, and the microscopy and imaging platform.
Key statistics during the period 2020-25 :

Paleostuffs :
The Paleostuffs are informal meetings of the 4pal team that take place every first Friday of the month, to share research questions over a coffee. If you are interested in presenting current or published research by yourself or your students, or the results of experiments that you would like to discuss for a future Paleostuff, please contact me, as this will keep the meetings going!
Coordinator Paleostuffs 2024-2025 : Anaïs Duhamel (anais.duhamel@ens-lyon.fr)
