Visites Insolites CNRS - Preparation and study of a giant ichtyosaur
On October 10, 2025, from 6:30 PM, as part of the unusual visits of the CNRS, the Geology and Paleontology Collections of Lyon open for an evening for the preparation of a specimen of ichthyosaur.
Created in 2020, the Visites Insolites offer each year unique experiences, in small groups, at the heart of research. Inaccessible sites, atypical experiences, singular meetings are on the program throughout the territory for the privileged few selected by lot.

Description of the visit
A giant ichthyosaur was recently unearthed during paleontological excavations, carried out by researchers from the Laboratoire de Géologie de Lyon in the Upper Trias of Var (France). Its preparation and scientific study are underway and require your help. Accompanied by the laboratory’s researchers, come and participate in the different stages of its scientific valorization process: restoration and reconstitution of skeletal parts, scientific drawing, surface digitization and 3D reconstruction, inventory and data analysis, scientific discussions and interpretations.
