Introducing the facility
The Biogeology platform at ENS de Lyon within the LGL is a key facility for the preparation and analysis of microbiological samples, as well as for the in-depth understanding of bacterial behaviors un relation to their environments and of biomineralization processes. It combines standard equipment for microbiological cultures under controlled conditions with sophisticated instruments such as state-of-the-art optical microscopes and a tritration device for mineral synthesis.
The microbiology and microscopy platform is an essential hub for research in biogeology and biophysics, providing a safe and technologically advanced environment for the observation and analysis of microorganisms. Through close collaboration between highly qualified technicians and researchers, the platform plays a central role in generating novel knowledge and improving our understanding of (geo)microbiology.
The platform is normally managed by a skilled technician in microbiology and microscopy. This professional is responsible for equipment maintenance, assisting researchers in the use of microscopes, preparing samples, managing microbial cultures, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
Advanced microscopes: The microscopy platform features a range of optical microscopes enabling observations in dark-field, polarized light, and fluorescence modes. These instruments allow the observation of microorganisms at sub-micrometer scales.
Microscopy room: The microscopy room is designed to maintain appropriate temperature, humidity, and lighting conditions for the various optical microscopy techniques. It is also equipped with an air-filtration system to ensure a clean environment.
Microbiology laboratories: Microbiology benches are available for the preparation, culture, and analysis of biological samples. The laboratories are also equipped with a laminar flow hood, chemical equipment for culture-medium preparation (pH meter, precision balance, etc.), optical microscopes for culture monitoring, a −80 °C freezer, as well as spectrophotometers and incubators allowing work under controlled atmosphere.
Training and support for researchers: The technician trains researchers in the proper use of microscopes and microbiology equipment. They advise on best practices and sample handling protocols.
Imaging and analysis systems: In addition to visual observation, the platform is equipped with advanced imaging systems for high-resolution image capture. Image analysis software is also available to help extract quantitative data from microscopic images.
Mineralization system: The platform is equipped with a titration system (the OMNIS system marketed by Metrohm) that enables mineral synthesis. It allows control of the physicochemical conditions of experiments (temperature, pH, etc.) and the continuous addition of reagents to the synthesis solution.
Storing and archiving data: To guarantee data integrity, the platform features secure storage systems for archiving images and research results. This enables continuous monitoring of experiments and the possibility of sharing data with other researchers.
Safety and biosafety: Strict safety and bio-safety protocols are in place to minimize risks. The technician, in agreement with the health and safety department and the researchers concerned, ensures compliance with these protocols.
Interdisciplinary collaborations: The platform promotes collaboration among researchers from different disciplines as well as with other laboratory platforms, fostering a holistic approach to (geo)microbiology research.
State-of-the-art equipment: The platform constantly strives to remain at the cutting edge of technology by investing in new equipment and maintaining the highest quality standards.
