Continental earthquakes, surface ruptures, and off-fault deformation. From field, to space, to lab.

Résumé :

For a long time, because they were difficult to document in details, surface ruptures associated to large continental earthquakes have been overlooked. However, the dramatic increase of remote sensing data availability during the last decade has opened new opportunities to map the detail of large continental surface ruptures and to derive generic properties for those ruptures and the fault geometry in general. Our new capacity to measure details of ground deformation using space geodesy, such as optical image correlation, has allowed us to systematically quantify the part of the deformation that is distributed next to the localized rupture. Together with numerical and analogue experiments those observations allow to challenge different mechanical assumptions derived from earthquake observations.
