The collaborative and international project ORACLE will focus on the environmental evolution of the peatlands in the Cuvette Centrale Congolaise, the central depression in the Congo Basin, which currently stores approx. 30 Pg C. ORACLE proposes to reconstruct the Holocene history of the Cuvette peatland and will provide high-resolution records of temperature, precipitation, vegetation, and carbon accumulation changes to:
- Better understand a key region of Holocene carbon cycling in the tropics,
- Provide a detailed record of regional carbon storage/loss during the Holocene,
- Resolve the drivers (natural and anthropogenic) of changes in these vulnerable but critical ecosystems.
